In the rough and tumble Old West before the railroad, making sure the mail, payroll and passengers got through hostile, untamed country by stage coach was a full-time job for Agent Jim Hardie of Wells Fargo. Famed for his skills not only as a detective who was seldom out-witted, Hardie was also known as 'the left-handed gun' for his skill with a Colt .45, traveling the by-ways and outposts of the West safe-guarding the property of his employer, and the lives of the passengers who rode Wells Fargo stages.
Tales of Wells Fargo was brought to life in the person of Dale Robertson (Iron Horse, Dynasty), the iconic western actor whose narration and on-camera presence as Agent Jim Hardie gave the Tales of Wells Fargo charm and realism. He was joined week after week by the cream of Hollywood and television actors, in tightly scripted stories of life in the mid 1800's American West.
Robertson is joined by a cast of regulars, including William Demarest (My Three Sons), Jack Ging (The A-Team), and a neighboring widow and her two daughters, who provide a bit of love interest for Agent Hardie!

Hurry! Hurry! And I do mean HURRY over to WBShop right now as they have two brand new sets listed at super low prices. Whether they'll be available at such a low price for long is unknown, but they have now listed both titles below for only $19.95 each.
Many other new titles are listed and we'll have more on them and the titles above as soon as they permanently become part of the WB site. They will be availble for rent at that time.
EDITORIAL NOTE: It is a little disappointing that Warner doesn't deem the Our Gang set worthy of a general release. But at $19.95, it seems hard to complain.

The Golden Age of Television
The hugely popular live American television plays of the 1950s have become the stuff of legend. Combining elements of theater, radio, and filmmaking, they were produced at a moment when TV technology was advancing and making art accessible to a newly suburban postwar demographic. These astonishingly choreographed, brilliantly acted, and socially progressive “teleplays” constituted an artistic high for the medium, bringing Broadway-quality drama to homes across the country. The following award-winning programs—curated for PBS in the early 1980s as the series The Golden Age of Television, with recollections from key cast and crew members—were conceived by such up-and-comers as Rod Serling and John Frankenheimer, and star the likes of Paul Newman, Mickey Rooney, Rod Steiger, Julie Harris, and Piper Laurie.

| WHAT: WHEN: STUDIO: PRICE: TITLES: | The William Castle Film Collection October 20th Sony Retail: $80.95, Our: $59.99 13 Frightened Girls (1963), 13 Ghosts (1960), Homicidal (1961), Strait-Jacket (1964), Mr. Sardonicus (1961), The Old Dark House (1963), The Tingler (1959), Zotz! (1962) | |
Sony has announced The William Castle Film Collection for release on October 20th. The five disc set features three new titles to DVD (13 Frightened Girls, The Old Dark House and Zotz!) along with tons of bonus features including the documentary Spine Tingler! - The William Castle Story.
It will retail for $80.95, but it's available at ClassicFlix.com for only $59.99. Full details are below.

The William Castle Film Collection
The master of ballyhoo who became a brand name in movie horror with his outrageous audience participation gimmicks is remembered in this, The William Castle Film Collection.
DISC 1:
13 Frightened Girls (1963, 89 min.)
Castle launched a worldwide hunt for the prettiest girls from different countries to cast in 13 Frightened Girls!. The stunt helped generate publicity for the film about the thirteen daughters of international diplomats in a Swiss boarding school, who stir up trouble when they mess in the diplomatic affairs of their parents and a Russian spy is discovered murdered.
13 Ghosts (1960, 85 min.)
Castle aggressively promoted the film with floats going up and down Hollywood Blvd. with “ghosts” riding along, holding signs, touting the movie. He named the gimmick created for 13 Ghosts “Illusion-O,” which was a special hand-held piece of cardboard with two transparent colored strips, one red and one blue. If you wanted to see the ghosts in the film, you looked through one, but if you were too frightened, you could look through the other and they weren’t visible. The film promised and delivered “13 Times the Thrills! 13 Times the Chills! 13 Times the Fun!” for the story of a family who inherits a haunted house, but discover a special pair of goggles that allows them to see their ghostly tormentors. The film starred Martin Milner (TV’s “Adam-12”) and Margaret Hamilton (The Wizard of Oz).
BONUS FEATURES:
DISC 2:
Homicidal (1961, 87 min.)
In Homicidal, the brutal stabbing murder of a justice-of-the-peace sparks an investigation of the dark family secrets in a sleepy small town. Castle promoted the film with a “Fright Break,” a 45-second timer during the film’s climax as the heroine approached a house harboring the sadistic killer. The voiceover advised the audience of the time remaining in which they could leave the theatre and receive a full refund if they were too frightened to see the rest of the film. To ensure filmgoers did not opt for the refund, Castle instituted the “Coward’s Corner.” Patrons were expected to follow yellow footsteps up the theater aisle, bathed in a yellow light and sit in a yellow cardboard booth in the theater lobby. Castle included a nurse offering a blood-pressure test, a recording blaring “Watch the chicken! Watch him shiver in Coward’s Corner,” and required them to sign a yellow “Coward’s Certificate” card stating, “I am a bona fide coward.” Needless to say, very few filmgoers opted out of the screening.
Strait-Jacket (1964, 93 min.)
Advised by his financial backers to eliminate the gimmicks, Castle hired Hollywood’s legendary Joan Crawford (The Women, Our Dancing Daughters) to star as an ax-murderess in this story of a mother, who, after a 20 year stay in an insane asylum for a double murder, visits her estranged daughter and raises suspicions about her odd behavior. At the last minute, Castle had cardboard axes handed out to patrons and sent Crawford on a nation-wide promotional tour of theaters showing the film.
BONUS FEATURES:
DISC 3:
Mr. Sardonicus (1961, 89 min.)
In this gothic tale set in 1880 London, a Baron’s face is frozen into a permanently grotesque hideous smile after digging up his father’s grave to retrieve a winning lottery ticket accidently left in his pocket. The gimmick allowed audiences to vote in a “Punishment Poll” during the climax of the film where Castle himself appears on screen to explain to the audience their options. Each member of the audience was given a card with a glow-in-the-dark thumb they could hold either up or down to decide if Mr. Sardonicus would be cured or die at the end of the film. Supposedly, no audience ever offered mercy and the villain was always punished.
The Old Dark House (1963, 86 min.)
Tom Posten (Zotz!) was again cast by Castle in this project about an American who sells cars in England who receives a mysterious invitation from an old, eccentric millionaire to visit his house in which he lives with his twin brother.
BONUS FEATURES:
DISC 4:
The Tingler (1959, 82 min.)
Legendary horror star Vincent Price (Edward Scissorhands) stars in The Tingler, the terrifying story of a docile creature that lives in the human spinal cord. They become activated by fright and can only be destroyed by screaming. In the film’s finale, one of the creatures kills a mute woman because she was unable to scream and the creature is let loose in a movie theatre. Castle promoted the film with the gimmick of “Percepto,” where audiences would actually feel the sensations of the actors on the screen. To achieve this, theaters wired select seats with tiny motors underneath that would vibrate during key scenes in the movie. The certain members of the audience would get a “tingling” sensation and were encouraged to “Scream - scream for your lives.”
Zotz! (1962, 87 min.)
Tom Posten (TV’s “Newhart”) finds a Zotz coin and discovers its awesome powers. After attempting to share its secret with the US government (where he is brushed off as a lunatic), his discovery captures the interest of foreign agents, who attempt to steal it. To promote the film, Castle provided each filmgoer with a “magic” coin which, unfortunately, did absolutely nothing.

| WHAT: WHEN: STUDIO: PRICE: | Marlene October 6th Kino Retail $29.99, Our: $23.99 | |
Released by Image Entertainment 10 years ago, and out of print for some time, the 1984 Maximilian Schell documentary Marlene has been announced by Kino with an October 6th release date. It is in German and English with optional English subtitles.
Retail will be $29.99, but it's available at ClassicFlix.com for only $23.99. Details below.

SYNOPSIS:
An Oscar nominee for Best Documentary and winner of the 1986 New York Film Critic’s Circle non-fiction film prize, Marlene is a “portrait of a remarkably strong-willed woman, stage-managing her career right up to the bitter end” (New York Times) that brilliantly lifts the veil on a movie star of the brightest magnitude as she is fading into twilight.
In September of 1982, Oscar winning actor and director Maximilian Schell (Julia, The Man in the Glass Booth) arrived in Paris for a series of on-camera interviews with Marlene Dietrich intended for a documentary film on the screen icon’s life and work. Despite having agreed to participate, the near-recluse Dietrich withdrew permission for her Judgment at Nuremburg co-star to film in her flat. Instead, in over 40 hours of audio-taped interviews, the 81 year-old screen legend provoked a battle royale of conversational mind games leading to unforgettably raw and truthful emotional revelations.
Using Dietrich’s candid, bruising, infuriating, and occasionally touching off-camera musings on childhood, marriage, sex, love, collaborators, co-stars, life, death, and the Holocaust, Schell “sets her words, like a score, to the stunning film images of the young Marlene.” (Washington Post). The hypnotic final result – buoyed by self-reflexive making-of footage, and an impressionistic re-creation of the sunless Paris flat where star and filmmaker fenced, fought, and ultimately connected – is the “Sunset Boulevard of documentaries” (Washington Post).

Following up quickly on Volume 1, VCI has announced an October 20th release date for Darn Good Westerns, Vol. 2. The six titles across two discs boasts such stars as Yvonne DeCarlo, Sterling Hayden, Zachary Scott, Jon Hall, James Craig, Preston Foster and Dane Clark.
It will retail for $29.99, but it's available at ClassicFlix.com for only $19.99.

TITLES IN THE SET:
Massacre (1956, 76 min.)
Indian treachery leads to tragedy in this made-on-location Western adventure with Dane Clark and James Craig as officers of the law who lead a small group of men into redmen territory to investigate reports of guns being sold to unfriendly Yaqui Indians. Every arrow screams death in an unexpected finale.
Three Desperate Men (1951, 72 min.)
Deputies Preston Foster and Jim Davis save their brother Ross Latimer from hanging for a crime he didn t commit, but a guard is killed in the fracas and this makes all three hunted criminals. Now living to defy the law instead of defend it, they rob a train and then brazenly attempt a one-of-a-kind double-holdup.
Outlaw Women (1951, 72 min.)
Meet the babes who shoot to thrill and make the coyotes howl! In this offbeat Western yarn, the town of Las Mujertes is run by women and controlled by saloon owner Marie Windsor, but male visitors (including Jackie Coogan as a gunslinger!) create complications.
Shotgun (1955, 80 min.)
Sterling Hayden challenges the fury of the untamed west with a shotgun in this gritty outdoor drama. He's a deputy who vows to avenge the murder of a marshal and hits the vengeance trail, encountering half-breed Yvonne DeCarlo and bounty hunter Zachary Scott. Tracking the killer leads into Indian country, where they are captured by redmen who pit Hayden and his quarry against each other in a shotgun duel. Harrison's Reports hailed this Technicolor Western as "fast, exciting and interesting ... it holds [the viewer] in tense suspense."
Deputy Marshal (1949, 76 min.)
Wrongly suspected of murder, deputy marshal Jon Hall devises a plan to draw all the actual suspects (including Dick Foran and Russell Hayden) out into the open and prove which one of them committed murder in order to profit off of the coming railroad line. Hall's real-life wife, Frances Langford, provides a few songs. "Fast-moving action" Motion Picture Exhibitor.
Four Fast Guns (1959, 72 min.)
Against a backdrop of Arizona landscapes, this offbeat Western spins the yarn of a wanted man (James Craig) who turns unofficial lawman to tame the town of Purgatory--but finds that the main troublemaker is a crippled saloon owner whose infirmity, according to the Western code, keeps him safe from gun justice. Craig becomes the target of a succession of hired leadslingers--including his own brother (Brett Halsey). Who is the fastest of the Four Fast Guns?
