More Warner Archive Titles

Fifteen more titles have been announced by Warner as part of their Warner Archive Collection. A lot of Katharine Hepburn and Randolph Scott in this wave with all but one being pre-1950 releases. The complete list is below.

As far as having them for rent, I want to thank everyone for their patience. WE WILL have them for rent, but dealing with WBshop has been a very painful process. Worse than pulling teeth, trying to get a very large order shipped that was placed over three weeks ago has been more like trying to pull teeth, in the dark, with tweezers on a hippopotamus.

Because of this, we have cancelled our large order and have started placing smaller orders that should start shipping this week. We will make an announcement when the first wave are in the database and available for rent.

ARTWORK & DETAILS ADDED: Jack Lemmon Film Collection

--Artwork and Details added to previous announcement--

Jack Lemmon Film Collection (Phffft! / Operation Mad Ball / The Notorious Landlady / Under the Yum Yum Tree / Good Neighbor Sam)

SET SYNOPSIS:

Phffft! (1954)
After their successful pairing in It Should Happen to You (1954), Oscar winner Judy Holliday (Best Actress, Born Yesterday, 1951) and Lemmon were reteamed in this romantic comedy by George Axelrod (The Seven Year Itch, Breakfast at Tiffany’s). Phffft! follows a married couple who divorce only to find out that their divorce is even less successful than their marriage. Columbia’s rising love goddess Kim Novak and Jack Carson provide support as the romantic interests Lemmon and Holliday take up with in an effort to make each other jealous.

Operation Mad Ball (1957)
Lemmon teamed up with director Richard Quine for the second of six films, (including My Sister Eileen; Bell, Book and Candle; It Happened to Jane; and How to Murder Your Wife) for this hilarious comedy about a party being planned by a group of enlisted men and their efforts to keep the fact a secret from an obnoxious, busy body officer. Lemmon headlined a cast of comedy legends including Ernie Kovacs (Our Man in Havana) and Mickey Rooney (Babes in Arms).

The Notorious Landlady (1962)
Richard Quine teamed two of his most frequent collaborators, Lemmon (in the fifth of their six films together) and Kim Novak (who made four films with the director) in a comedy/drama written by Blake Edwards (The Pink Panther, Victor/Victoria) and co-starring Fred Astaire (Top Hat, The Band Wagon). An American diplomat (Lemmon), stationed in London, rents a room from a landlady (Novak) only to discover she’s being watched by Scotland Yard and may have killed her missing husband.

Under the Yum Yum Tree (1963)
Nominated for Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy and Best Actor (Lemmon) Golden Globes, Under the Yum Yum Tree is a comedy about a young couple in love (Carol Lynley and Dean Jones) who agree to determine their “character compatibility” by living together platonically. Virtue eventually triumphs after a series of humorous incidents during which the couple’s lecherous landlord (Lemmon) hopes to seduce his new female tenant. Based on the risqué Broadway play by Lawrence Roman and co-starring Edie Adams (The Apartment, Lover Come Back), Imogene Coca (TV’s “Your Show of Shows”), and Paul Lynde (TV’s “Bewitched”); Under the Yum Yum Tree was a top-grosser at the box office.

Good Neighbor Sam (1964)
This wacky comedy about a happily married advertising agent (Lemmon) trapped into posing as his sexy neighbor’s husband so she can inherit $15 million, co-stars Romy Schneider (The Victors), Dorothy Provine (The Great Race), and Edward G. Robinson (Little Caesar). The story soon spirals out of control when her greedy in-laws hit the scene.

  • Two-part Documentary
  • The Ford Television Theatre’s “Marriageable Male” episode

Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre - Season 1

SYNOPSIS:

The original 29 first-season episodes on 4 DVDS! Digitally remastered and restored!

Wonderful tales of the Old West laden with history and adventure are presented in Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theatre, a half-hour western anthology TV series that debuted on CBS, October 5, 1956 and ran for 5 whole seasons. Dick Powell served as the host for the entire series and also starred as various characters in 15 episodes.

The series was originally based on the short stories and novels of western author Zane Grey, but as the series continued, new material was included. Aaron Spelling, who later became a legend in Hollywood, wrote twenty Zane Grey episodes. This show was unique because it was the only Western anthology on TV at the time. Anthologies were popular on early TV and were the equivalent of today’s TV movies. Because of this format, it attracted many stars who wanted to appear on it.

Zane Grey Theatre was also ground-breaking for producing five episodes which were spun-off into subsequent TV series: (1) Trackdown (2) The Rifleman (3) Black Saddle (4) Johnny Ringo & (5) The Westerner.

Directed by John English, Felix Feist, Bernard Girard, Christian Nyby and others.

Cast: Dick Powell, Ida Lupino, David Niven, (the rest in alphabetical order) Eddie Albert, Mary Astor, Ralph Bellamy, James Best, Ernest Borgnine, Lloyd Bridges, Rory Calhoun, Lee J. Cobb, Robert Culp, John Derek, Jack Elam, John Forsythe, Beverly Garland, James Garner, Sterling Hayden, Celeste Holm, John Ireland, David Janssen, Carolyn Jones, DeForest Kelley, Cloris Leachman, Jack Lemmon, Julie London, Strother Martin, Ralph Meeker, Jack Palance, Denver Pyle, Robert Ryan, Stuart Whitman, James
Whitmore (and many others).

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Exclusive Video Interview with Norman Powell (Dick Powell’s son) by Joel Blumberg.
  • Audio Interview on the history of Four Star Productions with author Christine Becker by Joel Blumberg
  • Classic TV Commercials

The July 7th release date appears to have established about a 3 month release cycle. Much too slow for such an underutilized film library, but still much better than zero!

Except for Beau Geste which was released three years ago as part of the Gary Cooper Franchise Collection, all are new to DVD. Bonus features are slim. The will each retail for $19.98, but are available at ClassicFlix.com for only $14.99.
