Timeless Media has announced the DVD release of another short-lived TV Western: Yancy Derringer - The Complete Series.

The 4-disc set will be released on August 7th and retail for $34.98, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $27.99. Bonus features are not expected.

The great Jock Mahoney plays Yancy Derringer in this thrilling adventure series with a backdrop of New Orleans and the Mississippi River in the years following the Civil War.

The owner of a riverboat named the Sultana and a family plantation, The Waverly, Derringer is a Southern aristocrat seemingly devoted to gambling, but in reality he is a secret agent authorized to help maintain law and order and justice in the city by any means that may become necessary. His constant companion is Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah (X Brands), a fierce Pawnee Indian who communicates with Yancy only by hand gestures, and appears ready at a moment's notice to use the shotgun that he always carries. Yancy’s weapons of choice are a Sharp’s four-barrel Derringer carried in his hat, another in his vest and a rapier in his cane. As Yancy and Pahoo make their way through the gambling casinos, riverboats and picturesque streets of New Orleans, they cross paths with rogues, aristocrats, sinners and saints, always ready to thwart crime and help the helpless!

The beautiful Madame Francine (Frances Bergen) is the proprietor of the Sazarac, a famous New Orleans private gambling house and is Yancy’s love interest in the series. Guest stars include Charles Bronson, Claude Akins, Lisa Lu, Lee Van Cleef, John Vivyan, Beverly Garland, Julie Adams, Robert McCord, Louise Fletcher and Woody Chambliss.

Jock Mahoney, a legend in Hollywood and a Marine fighter pilot in WW II, found work as a stuntman after the war, doubling for Errol Flynn, John Wayne and Gregory Peck before being signed by Gene Autry for the lead in The Range Rider, Autry’s 1951 TV series. He became film’s oldest Tarzan, playing the Ape-man in two films for producer Sy Weintraub, and performing all of his own stunts at the age of 44!

ATTENBOROUGH: Brighton Rock

Last December, Lionsgate announced plans to begin a MOD program releasing titles from its vast library of holdings.

Recently, and without any fanfare, they starting rolling out classic titles from their catalog. The first two out of the gate were previously released on DVD, but now out of print: The Cruel Sea (1953) and The Colditz Story (1955).

Now, the crime-thriller Brighton Rock (1947), featuring Richard Attenborough's chilling character Pinkie Brown gets its first offical U.S. release.

Although it is exclusively for sale at Amazon, nowhere else is it available to rent except here at ClassicFlix.com.

Adapted from the acclaimed Graham Greene novel, Brighton Rock stars Richard Attenborough in perhaps his most iconic on-screen role.

Pinkie is a small-time hoodlum running a protection racket at a Brighton racecourse. Following the murder of a visiting journalist, Pinkie becomes involved with Rose, a café waitress and potentially dangerous witness. Marrying her seems to ensure her silence, but events escalate and a trail of killings and double-crossings eventually lead to Pinkie's undoing and a thrilling and memorable climax.

More silents on Blu from Kino as they have announced Buster Keatons's The Saphead (Ultimate Edition) and The Devil's Needle and Other Tales of Vice and Redemption on both standard DVD & Blu-Ray for release on July 10th.

The Saphead will come with numerous bonus features that have yet to be announced. The Devil's Needle release showcases three titles making their DVD debut. Details are below. All will be single disc releases.

SYNOPSIS:
In its continuing effort to showcase the great works of early cinema, Kino Classics launches a new series of Blu-ray and DVD releases dedicated to archival rarities -- influential classics that have gone virtually unseen for decades. Presented in association with the Library of Congress, the films have been mastered in HD from the original film elements and are backed with newly commissioned musical scores. In some cases the films survive in less-than-perfect condition. But it is the mission of this series to preserve and promote these films in spite of their flaws, rather than allow them to disappear entirely from the cultural radar.

The Devil's Needle and Other Tales of Vice and Redemption is comprised of three feature films that dared to address incendiary subject matter: drug abuse, prostitution, and the exploitation of labor. By folding these explosive issues within layers of melodramatic storytelling, the filmmakers were able to dodge public criticism while making their political views even more compelling. These films were among the first to demonstrate the cinema's potential as a persuasive cultural force.

The Devil's Needle (1916, 66 min.)
Norma Talmadge stars as Renée, a French artist's model who uses morphine as an escape from the dull reality of her life. She recommends it to a neurotic artist played by Tully Marshall (Queen Kelly), because "it kindles the fires of genius." The artist quickly becomes addicted to the drug and the quality of his work begins to disintegrate. He takes on a new model, marries her, and starts her on the same path of moral degradation, until a guilt-ridden Renée decides to intervene in order to save them both. According to silent film historian Kevin Brownlow, The Devil's Needle was banned by the state of Ohio, but the censor board reversed its decision after recognizing the positive message beneath the film's scandalous surface. This special edition was mastered from a 35mm preservation print of the 1923 re-release version. The only known surviving copy, the element suffers significant nitrate decomposition during some scenes.

Children of Eve (1915, 73 min.)
Most famous today for its detailed reenactment of the tragic fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911, which had become a symbol of unsafe working conditions and capital's apparent disregard for labor. Viola Dana stars as an illegitimate child of the slums who labors in an oppressive canning company, not realizing she has a significant connection to the cold-hearted factory owner. This special edition includes outtake footage of the sensational fire scene, for which the Edison Studios set an actual four-story factory ablaze.

The Inside of White Slave Traffic (1913, 28 min.)
One of the most notorious films of the silent era, as it not only centered on the theme of forced prostitution, "It goes in for the utmost fidelity in picturing the evil which has been its inspiration" (Variety). Demonstrating the methods of the network of American pimps known as "white slavers" in meticulous detail (including a helpful guide to underworld slang), the film plays more like docudrama than melodrama. It is easy to see why it was such a public sensation upon its release. The complete four-reel version of the film no longer exists. This edition was mastered from the sole surviving copy, a two-reel version that has experienced significant damage. Explanatory titles have been added to bridge missing footage.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • The Inside of White Slave Traffic (unrestored version, 19 min.)
  • Children of Eve - 8 minutes of outtake footage

Kino has announced They Made Me a Fugitive (Blu-Ray) for release on July 24th. Bonus features are not likely.

It will retail for $29.95, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $23.99.

SYNOPSIS:
Alberto Cavalcanti (Dead of Night), one of the key figures in French and British cinema for several decades, turns his sights on the London underworld in the engrossing Brit Noir gangland drama They Made Me a Fugitive.

Set in unsettled postwar England where crime is on the upsurge, Fugitive is a suspenseful genre film which uses the picturesque Soho district as background to brilliant effect. The brooding and atmospheric cinematography of cameraman Otto Heller (Funeral in Berlin) is in the noir visual tradition, while the film's authenticity is due to the director's command of documentary technique. The London pubs, alleys, and back bedrooms turn into the poetry of urban realism. Also evident is Cavalcanti's deep understanding of the troubled characters, well-drawn in the script by noted playwright Noel Langley, the screenwriter of The Wizard of Oz.

Trevor Howard (Brief Encounter) gives one of his greatest performances as Clem, an ex-serviceman who is fed up after the War and drawn to the excitement of black-marketeering. His psychopathic, sadist gang boss, Narcy (Griffith Jones), betrays him when he refuses to deal in drugs, and the story becomes a breathtaking tale of revenge. The complex ending of They Made Me a Fugitive is not a trivial resolution, but lives up to the social consequences of this violent and disturbing film.
