Ladies of the German Cinema - Sappho & Backstairs Now on DVD

Grapevine Video, known for its hundreds of rare and hard-to-find titles on DVD-R, has released its third commercially pressed DVD - Ladies of the German Cinema. The single disc double feature has two rare German films 1921: Sappho starring Pola Negri and Backstairs (A.K.A. Hintertreppe) starring Henny Porten.

It is now available for rent or purchase. Purchase price is $19.99.

SYNOPSIS:
Berlin, Germany, 1921. The new Weimar Republic was in the midst of a powerful creative renaissance that still affects the arts as we know them today. Then and now, the most celebrated medium of Weimar Germany’s artistic revolution was its movies, and some of Germany’s most loved and celebrated actresses were at the height of their popularity. Some of those names include Asta Nielsen, Lil Dagover, and the two ladies featured in these two German films from 1921: Pola Negri and Henny Porten.

Sappho (1921, 82 min.)
Pola Negri’s Sappho is a rare, largely unseen film that has been restored with its original tints and released on video for the first time ever, complete with a devastating orchestral score. The story is an ornate, contemporary costume drama about a notorious vamp whose long run of using men is brought to an abrupt halt when she meets the love of her life. However, the ghosts of her past haunt the new relationship, including the fact that she has previously driven her new beau’s brother insane. (The lunatic brother is played by Alfred Abel, best known today for his role as Fredersen, the aristocratic lord of Metropolis [1927]).

Sappho showcases Negri in many roles—a mother, a bride, a heartless socialite, a devoted lover—and each role she plays is completely and thoroughly believable. Her staredown of a former lover when he brandishes a gun jumps off of the screen; her silent scream at the film’s end is so potent that it seems audible. The film itself was censored when it first reached American shores, and was only released in an altered version called Mad Love; this is the original, uncensored European version.

Backstairs (1921, 50 min.)
Henny Porten’s Backstairs (A.K.A. Hintertreppe) is one of the earliest attempts at reproducing a pioneering and revolutionary genre of German theatre called "intimate theatre" (kammerspiel). This purposefully minimalistic film seized the imaginations of film critics, and helped pioneer a small but very influential subgenre of German film called the kammerspielfilm; this film style would come to a greater fruition in F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise (1927).

Henny Porten’s career correlates to that of America’s Mary Pickford in many ways, except that Porten came off as a sexy mother figure, whereas Pickford was a sexy daughter figure. It should be of no surprise that Porten played many matronly characters in German movies, including an appearance as Mary, mother of Jesus, in the recently rediscovered 1924 German epic I.N.R.I. Most of Porten’s films are difficult to find and few were released in America, so this is a rare opportunity to watch her in top form.

Good news from Timeless Media this morning as they've confirmed Wagon Train - Season 1 for release on November 17th. Originally thought to be for genereal release, we've received word that the 10-disc set will be exclusive to Sam's Club. We will of course have it available for rent.

When and if it gets a general release, we'll have it for sale. However, this release will be a limited run in a collector's tin shaped like a covered wagon, so if it is re-released, it will probably be in a plain case.

On another Wagon Train note, we previously listed Wagon Train - The Color Season as only available for sale, now the 16 disc set is also available for rent with 32 color episodes from season 7 as well as 16 bonus episodes from other seasons of Wagon Train.

Wagon Train - Season 1

For the first time, NBC Universal and TMG bring you the complete, uncut first season of Wagon Train, one of America's most enduring and sought after TV westerns of all time. Direct from the NBC vaults, these 39 episodes have been re-mastered and presented on 10 dual layer DVD's in this special collector's edition.

Inspired by the classic western film "Wagonmaster", directed by John Ford (The Searchers, Stagecoach), Wagon Train debuted on Wednesday, September 18, 1957 on the NBC Television Network The ensemble acting, wonderful scripts and great western scenery soon made Wagon Train a fixture in American homes on Wednesday nights, as millions of Americans of all ages tuned in to NBC for great family entertainment.

Ward Bond, who starred in "Wagonmaster", recreated his role from the film as Major Seth Adams. He was joined by costars Robert Horton as Head Scout Flint McCullough, Frank McGrath as the cook Charlie Wooster, and Terry Wilson as Assistant Wagon master Bill Hawks, who all brought their skills as horsemen as well as wonderful actors to the show, giving Wagon Train a special, western flavor.

Each well crafted episode focused on a personal story of courage and perseverance of not just the main cast, but of the westward-bound emigrants as they made the perilous journey by Conestoga wagon from the banks of the Mississippi to California's Pacific shores, in the face of great odds. Their heart-warming (and sometimes heartbreaking) sagas tell the tale of how the American West was truly won, by hard-working and determined people driven by the promise of freedom and prosperity in the new land, and by those who saw them through the harshest of landscapes to the promised land that beckoned them.

Joining the cast each week were some of Hollywood's brightest stars in guest roles, including Ernest Borgnine (The Willy Moran Story), Sterling Hayden (The Les Rand Story), Agnes Moorehead (The Mary Halstead Story), Keenan Wynn (The Luke O'Malley Story), June Lockhart ( The Sarah Drummond Story), Debra Paget and Nick Adams (The Marie Dupree Story), and many, many more.

This 10 DVD collector's edition of Wagon Train – The Complete First Season, including all 39 great episodes, is sure to please both fans of the original broadcast, and newcomers who are seeing it for the first time. As Major Adams says as he leads his charges westward and they roll their Conestoga wagons out onto the prairie, "WAGONS, HO!"

WARNER ARCHIVE: Our Gang, Plus Crime & Noir Wave

Also permanently listed and available for rent are the Film Noir & Crime films below:

Released last year by Kino in a 2-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition, Buster Keaton's masterpiece The General is now set for a November 10th release date for its Blu-Ray debut.

And if the spectacluar restoration on the U.C.E. done by Kino is any indication, the upcoming Blu release should be just as stunning.

It is expected to be a single disc release and it will carry over all the bonus features on the U.C.E. with no new ones anticipated.

The General (Blu-Ray) will retail for $34.95, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $24.99.

SYNOPSIS:

Rejected by the Confederate army as unfit, and taken for a coward by his beloved Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), young Johnny Gray (Keaton) is given a chance to redeem himself when Yankee spies steal his cherished locomotive. Johnny wages a one-man war against hijackers, an errant cannon and the unpredictable hand of fate while roaring along the iron rails. “Every shot has the authenticity and the unassuming correct composition of a Mathew Brady Civil War photograph,” wrote film historian David Robinson, “No one—not even Griffith or Huston and certainly not Fleming (Gone With the Wind) caught the visual aspect of the Civil War as Keaton did.”

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Three musical scores to choose from:
    • Music composed and conducted by Carl Davis, performed by The Thames Silents Orchestra (in 5.1 Stereo Surround or 2.0 Stereo)
    • Music arranged and directed by Robert Israel
