TCM VAULT: Audie Murphy Westerns Collection in June

WHAT:
WHEN:
STUDIO:
TITLES:

Audie Murphy Westerns Collection (TCM Vault)
June 6th
Universal
Sierra (1950), Ride Clear of Diablo (1954), Drums Across the River (1954), Ride a Crooked Trail (1958)

More Audie Murphy has been the call, and Universal has heard it loud and clear with the scheduled D-Day release of their Audie Murphy Westerns Collection.

Owned by Universal, and released via TCM's Vault line, this set is now up for pre-order at TCM.com.

The likely four-disc set features:

  • Sierra (1950) - Wanda Hendrix, Burl Ives, Dean Jagger, Richard Rober, Tony Curtis
  • Ride Clear of Diablo (1954) - Susan Cabot, Dan Duryea
  • Drums Across the River (1954) - Walter Brennan, Hugh O'Brian, Jay Silverheels, Regis Toomey, Bob Steele
  • Ride a Crooked Trail (1958) - Gia Scala, Walter Matthau, Henry Silva
And while this set may be exclusive to TCM, nowhere else will these films be available to rent except at ClassicFlix.com. Put them in your rental queue now and they will be available for shipment in early June.

SYNOPSIS:

The most decorated American soldier of World War II, Audie Murphy parlayed his heroic exploits on the battlefield into a successful film career in Hollywood. His handsome, boyish appearance and shy, soft-spoken manner made him an appealing and uniquely different kind of action hero which provided an intriguing contrast to his athletic skill and quiet intensity.

While Murphy was lauded for his fine performances in John Huston's The Red Badge of Courage (1951) and his own film autobiography To Hell and Back (1955), the actor's real claim to fame was his convincing embodiment as a movie archetype - the strong, resilient man of the West.

Of the 44 films that he made, more than half of them were westerns. The Audie Murphy Westerns Collection presents four of his best entries in this popular genre, each digitally remastered.

TCM VAULT PRE-CODE: The Song of Songs, This Is the Night in May

WHAT:
WHEN:
STUDIO:
TITLES:

Pre-Code Double Feature (TCM Vault)
May 2nd
Universal
The Song of Songs (1933), This Is the Night (1932)

More Universal owned titles, via TCM's Vault line, are on their way as a Pre-Code Double Feature is now up for pre-order at TCM.com and is set to release on May 2nd.

The likely two-disc set features The Song of Songs (1933) with Marlene Dietrich, Brian Aherne and Lionel Atwill; and Cary Grant's feature debut This Is the Night (1932) starring Lili Damita, Charles Ruggles, Roland Young and Thelma Todd.

And while this set may be exclusive to TCM, nowhere else will these films be available to rent except at ClassicFlix.com. Put them in your rental queue now and they will be available for shipment in early May.

SYNOPSIS:
Before the industry's strict "Production Code" was enforced in 1934, screen censorship standards were more permissive in Hollywood than any other time until the late sixties, allowing for explicit taboo subject matter. Known today as the "Pre-Code" period, movies made between 1929 and mid-1934 capture some of the most decadent and intriguing filmmaking ever to hit the screen. Paired here together for the first time are two key "Pre-Code" classics.

The Song of Songs (1933)
Starring one of Hollywood's most glamorous screen legends, Marlene Dietrich, The Song of Songs is the story of Lily, a beautiful but naive peasant girl who is lured into posing as a nude model for aspiring sculptor Richard (Brian Aherne). Their working relationship quickly develops into a passionate love affair but, unable to commit himself to marriage, Richard abandons Lily and she is forced to marry a lecherous baron (Lionel Atwill) who has bribed her aunt.

This Is the Night (1932)
Featuring Cary Grant in his screen debut, This is the Night is a sparkling comedy of innuendo and amorous infidelity. Claire (Thelma Todd) plots to rendezvous with her lover Gerald (Roland Young) in Venice for the weekend. When her husband Stephen (Grant) returns home unexpectedly, plans are hastily rearranged for a group outing joined by Gerald's pal Bunny (Charlie Ruggles) and Germaine (Lily Damita), a penniless woman hired to pose as Gerald's wife. Soon, Germaine finds herself ardently pursued by all three men while Claire tries to hide her jealousy.

VCI has announced Silent Discoveries for release on May 3rd.

The double feature contains the 1953 George Jessel narrated compilation Yesterday and Today as well as the Italian Old Testament "spectacle" After Six Days (1920).

It will retail for $19.99, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $15.99.

SYNOPSIS:

Yesterday and Today (1953, 57 min.)
Veteran funnyman George Jessel is our host and narrator for this light-hearted look-back at the early and often humorously primitive days of motion pictures circa pre-1910.

The majority of film sequences benefit from not having much exposure, if any, since their original release, and most are featured in longer excerpts unlike the usual compilations of this type.

Errors are part of the fun as practically every film was misidentified! Those, and other errors, are corrected on a supplemental commentary track produced and narrated by film historian Richard M. Roberts.

After Six Days (1920, 62 min.)
Touted at the time as a “$3,000,000 Entertainment for the Hundred Millions,” this Old Testament spectacle delivered what it promised…”from the creation of Adam and Eve to the parting of the Red Sea.” The advertising claimed it was filmed over a period of five years at the “Exact Locations of Biblical History.”

Little is known about the actual production which has puzzled film scholars given its international box-office success. This edition was made from the only complete copy known to exist, a mint 16mm print of the 1929 7-reel sound reissue.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Yesterday and Today: Commentary by film historian Richard M. Roberts
  • After Six Days: 1946 reissue trailer

It will retail for $29.99, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $23.99. Bonus features (below) will carry over from the 2-disc standard def release.

SYNOPSIS:
At the height of World War II, the 918 Bomb Group suffers devastating losses and Brigadier General Frank Savage (Gregory Peck) is sent to take command. Because of his strong discipline his men resent him, and although Savage remains impersonal under heavy attack and un-relenting firefights, he becomes personally involved in their well being - a dangerous position for any leader - especially in the middle of a war!

"One of the most honest and powerful war pictures" (Life) of all time, this "thrilling, dramatic thunderbolt" (The Hollywood Reporter) "soars right up into the bright blue yonder" (Los Angeles Times)! Blending "thrilling action" with "personal drama brought to heroic heights" (The New York Times), this winner of two Academy Awards stars Gregory Peck in "the best performance of his career" (Look), a role which earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination!
