Yellow Submarine (1968) is getting a makeover and will be released on standard DVD and Blu-Ray this May 29th.

No word on bonus features, but based on the price point, I'm guessing a lot will be included. Stay tuned.

  1. Hi David,

I must say, It's hard to blog in secrecy. "Yellow Submarine" was scanned at 4k from a brand new timed, wetgate Triage Interpositive. The same people who brought you the restoration of "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help". Now, there is no way to screen in real time at 4k as it takes about 30 hours to render a reel to hi-def. There will be no "4K" release. Just a very nice Blu-Ray and several DCP's for the occasional festival.

We spent 4 months on this project just doing the digital remastering. This is no ordinary cartoon. Every frame was hand drawn and painted in 1967/8. It was my intent to keep it that way. Under tough digital conditions, I believe we married both worlds for a spectacular final result.

And for those who dismiss 4k scanning, they have a lot to learn. As we also scan 16mm in 4k, it is our belief that more K is better, regardless of your final product. When there is more to work with, well, there is more to work with "he's got a point there" Someone in the crowd yelled. We shall see next month what more K means. And what having someone, thoroughly familiar with the title, supervise the project from the repair and cleaning of the original negative to the digital deliverables.

    Stay tuned
