Think it might be a little early for news of Christmas releases? Think again. VCI has announced a November 3rd release date for A Christmas Carol (Blu-Ray).

This comes as very exciting news as VCI's standard version release of this 1951 classic two years ago (A Christmas Carol - Ultimate Collector's Edition) is superior by far to any other companies release before or since.

This "new state-of-the-art high definition film transfer from the original 35mm negatives" should prove even more spectacular. Also included will be the standard definition version as a bonus. More details below.

It will retail for $29.99, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $19.99. However, for 2 days only (until June 28th), we'll have it for the SPECIAL LOW PRE-ORDER PRICE of $15.98.

SYNOPSIS:
VCI is pleased to present this holiday classic first time ever on Blu-Ray! Some of Britain's best filmmakers united to produce one of England's greatest classics in this, the most well-known and critically acclaimed version of Charles Dickens' timeless tale. With an authentic, dramatic script by later-director Noel Langley, a superb performance by Alastair Sim and company, and under the careful direction of Brian Desmond Hurst, the 1951 filmed version of "A Christmas Carol" emerges as an outstanding cinematic presentation.

Alastair Sim's tour-de-force performance as the ultimate miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, has almost single-handedly made this beloved version of Charles Dickens' story into one of the best-loved Christmas films of all time. Some of Britain's best filmmakers united behind Sim, who was joined by a delightful cast of accomplished and acclaimed English actors; creating what many today believe to be the best and most faithful production of Dickens' immortal tale. Cranky and curmudgeonly Scrooge learns the error of his unkind ways and is taught the true meaning of the holidays when he is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Audio Commentary by George Cole
  • Includes the Standard DVD with Both the 4:3 and the 16:9 versions

The Patty Duke Show - Season 1 in September

More great new from Shout! Factory as they've set a September 29th release date for The Patty Duke Show - Season 1.

It will retail for $44.99, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $29.99.

SYNOPSIS:
From 1963 to 1966, American audiences were treated to the weekly comic hijinks of identical twin cousins, Patty Lane - a normal American teenager living in Brooklyn Heights, New York - and Cathy Lane - her Scottish cousin freshly arrived in the United States to finish her secondary schooling. Patty Duke, already an Academy Award-Winner for the role of The Miracle Worker, played the roles of both girls.

The Patty Duke Show immediately won over television audiences and ran for three fun-filled seasons, totaling 104 hilarious episodes. For the first time, all 66 episodes, including the show’s rare pilot, are available on DVD in this 6-disc set!

Criterion has announced a September 15th release date for three French films as part of their Essential Art House line. They are: Gervaise (1956), Le Jour se Lève (1939) and Mayerling (1936).

All three are single discs release with no bonus features expected. Each will retail for $19.99, but are available at Classicflix.com for only $14.99. Details below.

Mayerling (Essential Art House)
The gorgeous duo of Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux first appeared on-screen together almost twenty years before The Earrings of Madame de... , in this sumptuous tragic romance from Anatole Litvak (The Snake Pit, Anastasia). Mayerling is the profoundly emotional true story of the doomed adulterous affair between Archduke Rudolph, heir to the Austrian throne, and the young and innocent baron’s daughter Marie Vetsera.

Le Jour se Lève (Essential Art House)
The culmination of Poetic Realist cinema of the 1930s, Le Jour se Leve was Marcel Carne’s third collaboration with screenwriter and poet Jacques Prevert. A story of obsessive sexuality and murder--in which working class everyman Francois (Jean Gabin) resorts to killing in order to free the woman he loves from the controlling influence of another man—Le jour se lève cemented the enormous reputations of Gabin and Carné.

Gervaise (Essential Art House)
One of France’s most respected directors of the postwar era, Rene Clement directed such searing psychological dramas as Forbidden Games and Purple Noon. And Gervaise, his vivid 1956 adaptation of Emile Zola’s 1877 masterpiece L’assommoir, is no exception. An uncompromising depiction of a lowly laundress’s struggles to deal with an alcoholic husband while running her own business, Gervaise was nominated for an Oscar, and the indomitable Maria Schell earned best actress honors at the Venice Film Festival.

More clarity on a T.V. release, this time via Infinity Entertainment as they've scheduled a July 28th release date for The Judy Garland Show, Vol. 1. This volume (with two episodes), along with 12 more scheduled volumes to complete the 26 show run, will make it easy for Judy Garland fans to get her entire series in the best prints available.

Restored and digitally remastered from the original masters, the single disc release will retail for $19.99, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $14.99.

SYNOPSIS:
The Emmy-nominated Judy Garland Show ended its critically-acclaimed CBS-TV run after just one season (1963-64). Today, those 26 variety shows are revered by many as the entertainment icon’s finest work. Singing then-new material as well as the classics expected of her, this is the legendary Judy at her peak.

Also featured in volume one of this 13-volume collector’s set is daughter Liza Minnelli, now a legend in her own right. Then just 17, Liza sings her off-Broadway hit “You Are for Loving” and displays her renowned ability as a dancer on “Put on a Happy Face.” Liza and Judy shine in the duets “Together,” “We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together,” “The Best is Yet to Come,” “Bye, Bye, Baby” and “Bob White”; and revive the “We’re a Couple of Swells” tramp characters from Easter Parade.

Also featured in a dazzling display of song, dance and comedy are jazz greats Count Basie and his band and Mel Torme, who perform solo and join the great Garland on such stunners as “I Hear Music,” “The Sweetest Sounds,” “Strike Up the Band,” “April in Paris” and “Memories of You”; folk singer Judy Henske; and series regular Jerry Van Dyke who trades quips with Soupy Sales.

Judy also sings “A Cottage for Sale,” “Hey, Look Me Over,” “Liza,” “As Long as He Needs Me,” and “Come Rain or Come Shine,” a highlight of Judy’s 45-year career.

Restored and digitally remastered from the original masters, this dynamic diva will move you like no one else! Look for all 13 volumes, each featuring two hour-long shows.

  • Outtakes

While Paramount's classic film output has been lackluster, that certainly can't be said for their classic T.V. releases.

As with the announcement of Bonanza - Season 1 earlier today, the release of One Step Beyond - Season 1 by Paramount on the same day (September 15th) will end the frustrating process of fans trying to buy the best public domain set while at the same time trying not to duplicate episodes from previous purchases.

The 3-disc release containing all 22 of season one's episodes will retail for $49.99, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $37.99.

SYNOPSIS:
One Step Beyond was mainly filmed at M-G-M Studios, Hollywood, and partly at M-G-M British Studios, Borehamwood, Herts. It premiered nine months before The Twilight Zone, and was also known as Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond. All episodes are directed by Newland himself, a dab hand whose trademark is subtle, balletic camera work. This series fed the nation's growing interest in paranormal suspense in a different way. Rather than creating fictional stories with supernatural twists and turns, this program sought out 'real' stories of the supernatural, including ghosts, disappearances, monsters, etc., and re-creating them for each episode. No solutions to these mysteries were ever found, and viewers could only scratch their heads and wonder, "what if it's real?"
