Of the many Republic titles recently licensed by Olive films, none has sparked more interest than John Ford's The Quiet Man (1952). This is primarily due to the lackluster quality of the DVD released ten years ago, and knowing that Olive has pledged to "get it right" regarding their restoration.

Well, it's now official. The Quiet Man has been announced with a street date of January 22nd on both standard DVD and Blu.

The Blu-Ray will have a special pre-order price of $17.98 until Thursday November 1st. Don't miss this special! Bonus features are below.

Newly re-mastered and restored in 2012 with a 4K HD transfer, John Ford’s The Quiet Man celebrates one of Hollywood’s most romantic and enduring epics. The first American feature to be filmed in Ireland’s picturesque countryside… Ford richly imbued this masterpiece with his love of Ireland and its people.

Sean Thornton (John Wayne) in an American boxer who swears off fighting after he accidentally kills an opponent in the ring. Returning to the Irish town of his youth, he purchases the home of his birth and finds happiness when he falls in love with the fiery Mary Kate (Maureen O’Hara). But her insistence that Sean conduct his courtship in a proper Irish manner with matchmaker Barry Fitzgerald along for the ride as “chaperone” is but one obstacle to their future happiness: the other is her brother (Victor McLaglen), who spitefully refuses to give his consent to their marriage, or to honor the tradition of paying a dowry to the husband.

Sean could care less about dowries, he would’ve punched out the bullying McLaglen long ago if he hadn’t sworn off fighting. But when Mary Kate accuses him of being a coward and walks out on him, Sean is finally ready to take matters into his own hands, the resulting fistfight erupts into the longest brawl ever filmed, followed by one of the most memorable reconciliations in movie history! The Quiet Man won a total of two Academy Awards including Best Director (Ford) and Best Cinematography and received five more nomination including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (McLaglen).

BONUS FEATURES:

  • Printed Booklet: Joseph McBride on The Quiet Man Adapted from his biography: Searhing for John Ford
  • The Making of The Quiet Man (1992, 28 min.) - Written and hosted by Leonard Maltin – Includes interviews with Michael Wayne, Toni Wayne LaCara and Andrew V. McLaglen

A Januray 15th release date has been announced for standard and Blu-Ray versions of Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1935).

This rescue public domain purgatory by Criterion will come with the usual bonus features offered by the label.

An ordinary British couple vacationing in Switzerland suddenly find themselves embroiled in a case of international intrigue when their daughter is kidnapped by spies plotting a political assassination. This fleet and gripping early thriller from the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, was the first film the director made after signing to the Gaumont-British Picture Corporation.

Besides affirming Hitchcock’s brilliance, it gave the brilliant Peter Lorre his first English-speaking role, as a slithery villain. With its tension and gallows humor, it’s pure Hitchcock, and it set the tone for films like The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • New audio commentary featuring film historian Philip Kemp
  • New interview with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro
  • The Illustrated Hitchcock, an extensive interview with director Alfred Hitchcock from 1972, conducted by journalist Pia Lindstrom and film historian William Everson
  • Audio excerpts from filmmaker François Truffaut’s legendary 1962 interviews with Hitchcock
  • Restoration demonstration
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Farran Smith Nehme

Available exclusively for purchase at TCM.com, this set will be available for rent here at ClassicFlix and nowhere else!

SYNOPSIS:
Although her film career began in the silent era with bit parts in features and comedy shorts by Mack Sennett, Carole Lombard didn’t become a major star until 1934 when she played the female lead in Twentieth Century, one of the most popular screwball comedies of that era. Prior to that, she was mostly cast in contemporary romances or dramatic roles which showcased her elegant beauty and, at the same time, displayed her accessible, unpretentious nature.

The three films in this collection offer a fascinating look at a pre-stardom Lombard at Columbia Pictures before she became known as a dazzlingly beautiful and sexy comedienne. Presented for the first time on DVD, restored and remastered, these three movies demonstrate Lombard’s versatility and strengths as an actress during a career transition.

No More Orchids (1932)
Lombard plays a spoiled heiress who falls in love with a struggling lawyer despite her arranged marriage to a European prince.

Brief Moment (1933)
The class conscious formula is reversed in Brief Moment (1933) in which Lombard stars as a nightclub singer trying to convince her rich playboy finance to abandon his party going lifestyle in favor of a respectable livelihood.

Lady by Choice (1934)
Lombard gets to shine in one of her best early roles as a fan dancer who adopts a feisty elderly woman with a police record.

Dick Powell plays a returning World War II veteran who at first blush would seem to have everything going his way - a good marriage with a beautiful wife in Jane Wyatt and a healthy, energetic young son in Jimmy Hunt, along with a lovely home and a position as a Los Angeles insurance executive. Powell exhibits the restlessness that many returning servicemen experienced following the global military conflict. His penchant for excitement leads him into an extra-marital affair with blonde model Lizabeth Scott.

What propels Pitfall into the ranks of a chilling film noir drama is the appearance of a ruthless sociopath will to destroy all in his path to secure his objective, which in this case is possessing Liz Scot, body and soul. Corrupt private detective Raymond Burr overlooks the unyielding rebuff of Scott who detests him. Burr convinces himself that eventually her feelings will change.
