Criterion has announced an April 9th release date for Laurence Olivier's Richard III (1955) on standard DVD & Blu-Ray.

Both come with all the bonus features from the previous standard 2-disc release, with the exception of an essay by historian Bruce Eder. Exclusive the Blu release is a booklet featuring an essay by film critic Amy Taubin.

With Richard III, Laurence Olivier-as director, producer and star-transfigures Shakespeare's great historical drama into a mesmerizing vision of Machiavellian villainy. Olivier's performance, viewed as the greatest of his career, charges Richard with magnetic malevolence as he steals his brother Edward's crown through a murderous set of machinations.

His inspired direction brings to the screen superlative performances by veteran theater actors Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud and the young Claire Bloom.

Filmed in Vista Vision and Technicolor, The Criterion Collection is proud to present the restored film for which Olivier received the 1956 British Academy Film Award for the Best Actor and Best Film.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Audio Commentary by Playwright and Stage Director Russell Lees, Joined by John Wilders, Former Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company
  • Great Acting: Laurence Olivier, a 1966 BBC Interview with Olivier, Hosted by Renowned Theater Critic Kenneth Tynan

Kino has scheduled March for the Blu-Ray debuts of Buster Keaton's hilarious College (1927) and 1953's charming Little Fugitive. A standard Ultimate Edition DVD of College will also be released.

Bonus features for the Keaton feature are below, but have yet to be determined for Fugitive.

Buster Keaton goes back to school and stages a hilarious send-up of university life in College.

Keaton stars as Ronald, an idealistic freshman who attends Clayton College in pursuit of higher learning, but finds himself instead embroiled in a war of athletics as he fights for the heart of his beloved coed, Mary (Anne Cornwall). More than he had in any other feature, Keaton stretched the boundaries of solo physical comedy.

In a series of unforgettable vignettes, stone-faced Ronald tries his hand as a baseball player, soda jerk, waiter, coxswain, and track star, performing each task with a steady determination but with consistently disastrous results. These scenes are especially amazing because in demonstrating Ronald's athletic inadequacies, Keaton reveals a surprising degree of physical prowess and finesse, particularly during the film's exhilarating climax.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Audio commentary by film historian Rob Farr (Slapsticon Founder)
  • Visual essay on the film's locations
  • "The Scribe," a 1966 industrial short that was Keaton's final filmed performance

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Pricing info will probably follow shortly, but this morning Warner Bros. announced Maverick - The Complete Second Season for release on April 23rd.

For fans of classic TV Westerns such as Cheyenne, Bonanza and Gunsmoke, Maverick - The Complete Second Season comes to DVD!

James Garner stars as a card shark travelling the Old West with a sense of humor and a knack for getting into trouble. Wisecracking ladies’ man Bret Maverick (Garner) and his more serious brother Bart (Jack Kelly) – two handsome bachelors on the loose in the Wild West – have more success at the game of poker than the game of love.

Yet they keep trying their luck in one frontier outpost after another. Though cardsharps Bret and Bart would just as soon slip out of town quietly as face a gunman, when it’s time for a showdown, don’t bet against a Maverick!
