CLASSIC TV: Highway Patrol, Bat Masterson & Sea Hunt

With today's announcement, it's clear that TGG Direct is making an aggressive push to become a major player in DVD distribution of classic films and TV. TGG WHO you ask?

TGG Direct (The Garr Group), in business since 2006, initially waded in the public domain pool of releases. Not too long after, they licensed previously released MGM films and packaged them in double and triple features at very reasonable prices. Now, with what's out, and what's coming out, TGG is a label you'll want to keep in mind.

What's out? Well, we knew they were coming, but we didn't bake a cake. As with many PD company releases of TV shows, we purchase their product before we list it on our site. The reason? Too many smaller companies put out duplicate episodes with horrible quality prints.

This is not at all the case with the two shows TGG released on January 29th (Sea Hunt & Bat Masterson). From what we've seen, the quality is great and the sets (in our opinion) are undervalued with a retail price of just $24.96 (when in stock, we'll have them for $15.99).

So here is what was released last month that we have available for rent today. All four seasons of Sea Hunt and the first two (of three) seasons of Bat Masterson. Note: these are not best-of's and they are not MODS, but complete seasons on standard DVD's.
But wait, it gets better.

For those who have been waiting for MGM to continue the crime drama series Highway Patrol, TGG has answered the call with not just Season 2, but also completing the series on DVD with Seasons 3 and 4.
They will street on April 2nd and retail for $24.96, but they are available here at ClassicFlix for only $15.99 each.

  • Wife, Husband and Friend (1939) - Loretta Young, Warner Baxter, Binnie Barnes, Cesar Romero
  • Wilson (1944) - Charles Coburn, Alexander Knox, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Thomas Mitchell, Ruth Nelson, Cedric Hardwicke, Vincent Price
NOTE: Aspect ratio for the widescreen releases are listed as given by Fox. Some, like 23 Paces to Baker Street, are listed as 4:3 Pan and Scan while others, Oh, Men! Oh, Women!, are letterboxed with the original aspect ratio. We'll verify specs once they come in.

Available on March 5th, all can be found in the recent additions section.

The 4-disc set contains 39 episodes and will retail for $29.93, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $23.99.

Debuting on ABC in 1957, Tombstone Territory starred Pat Conway as Sheriff Clay Hollister and Richard Eastham as Harris Claibourn, the editor of Tombstone s local newspaper, the Tombstone Epitaph. Priding itself on its authenticity the show employed a western historian to ensure the accuracy of the stories.

Tombstone, labeled "The Town Too Tough To Die", was located in Arizona Territory, just south of Tucson, and was one of the Old West's most notorious frontier towns and the site of the shootout, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Sheriff Hollister has his hands full trying to keep the peace in his city as gunslingers, bank robbers, and criminals of all kinds ride through town. Newspaper editor, Harris Claibourn, acts as the show s narrator adding an extra layer of realism to the program.

Many wonderful guest stars appeared on the show including, John Vivyan, John Doucette, Angie Dickinson, James Best and many others.

Presented here are all 39 episodes from the first season, straight from the film archives of MGM, offered in pristine condition on 4 DVD s for your enjoyment.

Magic Town (1947), a William Wellman romantic comedy starring James Stewart and Jane Wyman, has been announced for release on DVD and Blu-Ray by Olive Films.

Both street on April 23rd with the Blu-Ray having the special pre-order price of $17.98 until Friday February 22nd.

James Stewart (It’s a Wonderful Life) plays Lawrence “Rip” Smith in this Capraesque tale in which an ambitious pollster finds a small town whose citizens' opinions accurately reflect those of America at large. On discovering this oddity in the darling town of Grandview, Smith plots to exploit this "mathematical miracle."

Posing as an insurance salesman along with his two sidekicks, Ike Sloan (Ned Sparks) and Mr. Twiddle (Donald Meek), he romances the local newspaper editor while trying to keep her from discovering his true intentions. The young editor, Mary Peterman (Jane Wyman, Magnificent Obsession), has hopes for improving the town with a new civics center. Mary soon proves to be smarter than "Rip" ever anticipated. When she exposes the truth, the resulting publicity threatens to destroy the town and everything it stood for.

Writer and producer Robert Riskin is remembered today as the man who wrote some of Frank Capra’s best films, including Mr. Deed Goes to Town and It Happened One Night. Here he made his independent producing debut with this film directed by the great William A. Wellman (The Ox-Bow Incident).

More rare offerings from Timeless Media as they have announced release dates for Stoney Burke - The Complete Series and The Gene Autry Show - Season 5.

Stoney Burke is a Jack Lord series that lasted for one 32 episode season. The hour-long western follows Stoney on his quest to be a world champion bronc rider.

The fifth and final season of the Gene Autry Show was only 13 episodes -- but it was filmed in color! It will be presented as such in this 2-disc set.

Stoney Burke is a rodeo rider competing for the Golden Buckle, the award given to the world champion saddle bronc rider. During his quest, Stoney becomes entangled in the lives of numerous people, and gets into and out of trouble.

He is sometimes accompanied by his friends Ves Painter, played by Warren Oates, and E.J. Stocker, played by Bruce Dern.

Gene Autry Show - Season 5 (No Artwork Yet)
The Gene Autry Show, sponsored by Wrigley's Doublemint Chewing Gum, originally aired on CBS from 1950 to 1955. The program follows the adventures of singing cowboy Gene Autry, his Wonder Horse Champion, and his sidekick Pat Buttram, who travel the Southwest to maintain law and order.

The series is a collection of stand-alone half-hour episodes: sometimes Gene and Pat know each other sometimes they do not; some shows are set in the past and some are in the near present of the early 1950s. Each unique show has Gene's trademark mixture of action, comedy, and singing.

The fifth and final season of The Gene Autry Show includes 13 episodes filmed in color. Several episodes also feature Little Champ, Gene's very popular trick pony.

Criterion has announced a May 14th release date for standard DVD and Blu-Ray versions of 3:10 to Yuma (1957) and Jubal (1956).

Both are directed by Delmer Daves and star Glenn Ford (and also feature Felicia Farr). Bonus features are minimal (below).

In this beautifully shot and acted, psychologically complex western, Van Heflin is a mild-mannered cattle rancher who takes on the task of shepherding a captured outlaw, played with cucumber-cool charisma by Glenn Ford, to the train that will take him to prison. This apparently simple plan turns into a nerve-racking cat-and-mouse game that will test each man’s particular brand of honor.

Based on a story by Elmore Leonard, 3:10 to Yuma is a thrilling Western with plenty of action and directed with intense feeling and precision by the supremely talented studio filmmaker Delmer Daves.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • New interviews with author Elmore Leonard and Glenn Ford’s son and biographer, Peter Ford
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Kent Jones

A trio of exceptional performances from Glenn Ford, Ernest Borgnine, and Rod Steiger form the center of Jubal, an overlooked Hollywood treasure from genre master Delmer Daves.

In this Shakespearean tale of jealousy and betrayal, Ford is an honorable itinerant cattleman, befriended and hired by Borgnine’s bighearted ranch owner despite his unwillingness to talk about his past. When the new hand becomes the target of the flirtatious attentions of the owner’s bored wife (Valerie French) and is entrusted by the boss with a foreman’s responsibilities, his presence at the ranch starts to rankle his shifty fellow cowhand, played by Steiger.

The resulting emotional showdown imparts unparalleled psychology intensity to this western, a vivid melodrama featuring expressive location photography in Technicolor and CinemaScope.

Includes a booklet featuring an essay by critic Kent Jones.

Naked City - 40 Episode Best of Collection Now Available

On February 5th, Image Entertainment released Naked City - 40 Episode Best of Collection. The 10-disc set is now available for rent here at ClassicFlix.com.

Last decade, Image released many episodes of the series in various "best of" sets or single disc releases that have long gone out of print. The content here probably isn't anything new, but this release showcases the series well and, when we can get some in stock, only retails for $29.99.

Additionally, while not pristine, the prints look very good for this ground-breaking crime-drama series. Details below.

Gritty and realistic, Naked City is one of television's best police dramas.

Filmed on the streets of New York City, this ever-popular series puts a human face on crime, going beyond a simplistic portrayal of good vs. evil to delve into the complex personal dramas of the people involved. Filled with swift-moving action, the stories are often violent and tragic, but also contain their share of humor, absurdity and even fairy tale romance.

Paul Burke stars as Detective Adam Flint, the young, handsome detective who manages to hold on to his ideals, and Horace McMahon is his crusty older boss, Lt. Mike Parker. Because of the critically acclaimed series' outstanding reputation, the series attracted many top film and television actors for its guest-starring roles.
