The Monster and the Ape (1945), yes that's correct, The Monster and the Ape, a 15 chapter serial is set for release on May 18th from Cheezy Flicks.

Cheezy has put out some reliable cheese like Curse of the Faceless Man (1958) and last October's release Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952), among others. Their most popular titles have been G-Men vs. The Black Dragon (1943) and King of the Rocket Men (1949).

The 2-disc set will retail for $19.97, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $14.99. The theatrical trailer is the lone bonus feature.

MGM: 11 More MODS Including The Gallant Hours, Honey Pot, Fitzwilly

Back in December, MGM quietly started producing titles via MOD (manufactured-on-demand), instead of the standard pressed DVD route. We have now learned, that 11 more titles (below) are part of a new wave soon to be released.

Additionally, Amazon.com (the only place they are available for sale), has set up a specific page for MGM MODs at their site.

And while they're only available for purchase at Amazon, they'll only be available for rent here at ClassicFlix.com.

No dates are yet given for exact release, so we've put the expected release date of July 1st. When solid release dates are given, the titles will be updated.

Most remakes usually bring groans from the average moviegoer, but not from classic film fans or anyone who want unreleased titles to see the light of day on DVD.

Tim Burton's Alice, for example, opens in theaters this week and led to a number of Alice related releases, including Universal's Alice in Wonderland (1933) which debuts on DVD tomorrow.

Now Sony is hoping to ride the coattails of Russell Crowe's Robin Hood which hits theaters in May with four Robin Hood releases of their own due on May 11th. The four (above) are curiously not part of a boxed set, and are not expected to have any bonus features.

All are in color and will retail for $14.94 each, but are available at ClassicFlix.com for only $10.99. More details to follow.

More news from Criterion as they have announced a June 29th release date for the Blu-Ray release of The Leopard (1963). Bonus features (below) will be the same as the standard-def edition.

The 2-disc set will retail for $49.95, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $37.99.

SYNOPSIS:
Making its long-awaited Blu-Ray debut, Luchino Visconti's The Leopard is an epic on the grandest possible scale. The film recreates, with nostalgia, drama, and opulence, the tumultuous years of Italy's Risorgimento--when the aristocracy lost its grip and the middle classes rose and formed a unified, democratic Italy.

Burt Lancaster stars as the aging prince watching his culture and fortune wane in the face of a new generation, represented by his upstart nephew (Alain Delon) and his beautiful fiancée (Claudia Cardinale). Awarded the Palme d'Or at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, The Leopard translates Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel, and the history it recounts, into a truly cinematic masterpiece. The Criterion Collection is proud to present the film in two distinct versions: Visconti's original Italian version, and the alternate English-language version released in America in a newly restored special edition.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • High-definition digital transfer, supervised by director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno, with restored image and sound and presented in the original Super Technirama aspect ratio of 2.21:1 (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
  • The 161-minute American release, with English-language dialogue, including Burt Lancaster’s own voice
  • Audio commentary by film scholar Peter Cowie
  • A Dying Breed: The Making of The Leopard, an hour-long documentary featuring interviews with Claudia Cardinale, screenwriter Suso Ceccho D’Amico, Rotunno, filmmaker Sydney Pollack, and many others
  • Video interview with producer Goffredo Lombardo
  • Video interview with professor Millicent Marcus on the history behind The Leopard
  • Original theatrical trailers and newsreels
  • Stills gallery of rare behind-the-scenes production photos
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film historian Michael Wood

Criterion has announced a June 22nd release date for Carol Reed's Night Train to Munich (1940).

The war-time thriller stars Margaret Lockwood, Rex Harrison and Paul Henreid. Bonus features and synopsis are below.

It will retail for $29.95, but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $23.99.

SYNOPSIS:
A twisting, turning, cloak-and-dagger delight, Night Train to Munich is a gripping, occasionally comic confection from writers Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat and director Carol Reed.

Paced like an out-of-control locomotive, Night Train takes viewers on a World War II–era journey from Prague to England to the Swiss Alps, as Nazis pursue a Czech scientist and his daughter (Margaret Lockwood), who are being aided by a debonair British undercover agent, played by Rex Harrison. This captivating, long-overlooked adventure—which also features Paul Henreid—mixes comedy, romance, and thrills with enough skill and cleverness to give the master of suspense himself pause.

BONUS FEATURES:

  • New video conversation between film scholars Peter Evans and Bruce Babington about director Carol Reed, screenwriters Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, and the social and political climate in which Night Train to Munich was made
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Philip Kemp
