Currently exclusive to Amazon, but available for rent here at ClassicFlix, The Caine Mutiny (Blu-Ray) has been announced for wide release by Sony on December 6th.

It will retail for 19.99 but is available at ClassicFlix.com for only $15.99. Bonus features below.

SYNOPSIS:
Nominated for seven Academy Awards in 1955, including Best Picture and Best Actor, The Caine Mutiny is a classic film about the unstable Captain Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) and his tumultuous command of an old minesweeper and her weary crew.

On the high seas during the dramatic battles of World War II, Queeg's by-the-book approach pushes his crew and his popular second-in-command, Lt. Maryk (Van Johnson), to the breaking point. After a series of questionable orders, Maryk confronts Queeg when he orders the ship directly into the path of a deadly typhoon. Maryk invokes naval code and relieves Queeg of his command, forcing the crew to mutiny. Once safely back in port, Maryk is court-martialed for treason, setting off a tense trial that exposes the true state of Queeg's mind. Nominated for Best Actor, Humphrey Bogart gives a searing performance as he is systematically broken down in this classic tale of military conduct in a time of war.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • Commentary with Richard Pena and Ken Bowser
  • Behind the Caine Mutiny Documentary

No, this is not a spoof announcement.

In their first wide-release of new material in two and-a-half years, 20th Century-Fox has announced Stars and Stripes Forever (Blu-Ray / DVD Combo) for release on December 13th.

Fox's classic output has been dormant since May 2009's Man Hunt, as they mainly focused on re-releasing catalog titles on Blu-Ray. No word yet, but hopefully this will be followed up by many releases from their deep catalog.

This 2-disc combo pack contains 1 Blu-Ray disc and 1 Standard DVD. Retail will be $34.99, but it's available at ClassicFlix.com for only $27.99.

Bonus features are below, however it is not clear if they are exclusive to the Blu-Ray or if they are included in both.

SYNOPSIS:
Stars and Stripes Forever is the rousing and patriotic march heard every Fourth of July, and, the inspirational film about the American music legend who wrote it, John Philip Sousa.

Beginning with Sousa’s days as a sergeant major in the United States Marine Corps and leader of the Corps’ famous marching band, Stars and Stripes Forever transports you back to the 1890s and Sousa’s ascent to world renown as a composer and conductor of The Sousa Band. Three-time Academy Award Nominee Clifton Webb shines as Souza, “The March King,” along with Robert Wagner, Debra Paget and Ruth Hussey.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • From Our National March to the Silver Screen
  • John Philip Sousa's Contribution to American Music
  • Pressbook, Advertising and Still Galleries
  • Original Theatrical Trailer

Previously released by Criterion in 2007, Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938) will make its Blu-Ray debut on December 6th. All the bonus features from the previous release will carry over.

Out on the same day will be Ernst Lubitsch's Design for Living (1933) on Standard and Blu. Released in SD by Universal in 2005, Design gets the Criterion treatment with great bonus features (below) in addition to being presented in a sparkling new transfer.

Design for Living
Gary Cooper, Fredric March, and Miriam Hopkins play a trio of Americans in Paris who enter into a very adult "gentleman's" agreement, in this continental pre-Code comedy freely adapted by Ben Hecht from a play by Noël Coward, and directed by Ernst Lubitsch.

A relationship comedy and a witty take on creative pursuits, it concerns a commercial artist (Hopkins) unable—or unwilling—to choose between the equally dashing painter (Cooper) and playwright (March) she meets on a train en route to the City of Light.

BONUS FEATURES:
  • “The Clerk,” starring Charles Laughton—director Ernst Lubitsch’s segment of the 1932 film If I Had a Million, which he made just before Design for Living
  • Selected-scene commentary by film professor William Paul
  • Play of the Week: A Choice of Coward, a 1964 British television production of the play Design for Living, introduced on camera by playwright Noël Coward
  • New interview with film scholar and screenwriter Joseph McBride on Lubitsch and Ben Hecht’s screen adaptation of the Coward play
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Kim Morgan
