COLUMBIA CLASSICS: Betty Compson is The Belle of Broadway

A first for Sony this week as they have announced a silent film, The Belle of Broadway (1926), to be released as part of their Columbia Classic line. Prior to Belle, the studios MOD program had only offered sound films.

As the original poster art declared, the Betty Compson film is "A romantic drama of youth glorified -- age defied.  It is due to street on December 3rd.

COLUMBIA CLASSICS: Dick Van Dyke in The Comic & More in October

More welcome releases are scheduled from Sony's Columbia Classic line this October 8th

They include Carl Reiner's The Comic (1969) starring Dick Van Dyke, Michele Lee, Mickey Rooney, Cornel Wilde and Steve Allen and the previously announced, then postponed Babies for Sale (1940) starring Rochelle Hudson, Miles Mander and a young Glenn Ford.

Also out is:

• Air Hostess (1933) - Evalyn Knapp, James Murray, Jane Darwell, Thelma Todd
• Unwelcome Stranger (1935) - Jack Holt, Mona Barrie, Jackie Searl, Ralph Morgan, Frankie Darro, Frank Orth

John Derek, Lee J. Cobb and Jody Lawrance star in Sony's latest Columbia Classic offering, The Family Secret (1951), due on September 24th.


Law student David Clark (John Derek) finds himself in trouble when he accidentally kills his best friend. Wracked with guilt, he tells his father, attorney Howard Clark (Lee J. Cobb), about it.

David is urged to confess, but when another man is arrested for the crime, David clams up and offers his assistance to put the wrongly accused man away. As the case continues, the tension between father and son grows, and David has to decide whether or not to confess. 

COLUMBIA CLASSICS: Dennis Morgan & Joan Davis in Latest Wave

Sony has announced four more from their Columbia Classic line for release on July 9th.

Headlining this latest wave is Uranium Boom (1956) starring Dennis Morgan, Patricia Medina and William Talman and the 1950 Western-Comedy The Traveling Saleswoman starring Joan Davis, Andy Devine and featuring Adele Jergens and Joe Sawyer.

Also out are:

COLUMBIA CLASSICS: Herbert Marshall in Adventure in Washington

Four new-to-DVD titles make up Sony's Columbia Classic wave for March with Adventure in Washington (1941) starring Herbert Marshall, Virginia Bruce and Gene Reynolds topping the bill.

Westerns and Action-Adventures fill out the wave that will street on March 12th:

• The Big Gusher (1951) - Wayne Morris, Preston Foster, Dorothy Patrick
• The California Trail (1933) - Buck Jones, Helen Mack, Luis Alberni
• Death Goes North (1939) - Edgar Edwards, Sheila Bromley

COLUMBIA CLASSICS: Blondell, Kovacs & More in February Wave

Sony has announced eight more Columbia Classic DVDs for release on February 19th.

Two standouts are There's Always a Woman (1938) starring Joan Blondell, Melvyn Douglas, Mary Astor, Frances Drake and Jerome Cowan and Five Golden Hours (1961) starring Ernie Kovacs, Cyd Charisse and George Sanders.

The other six are:
