Quo Vadis (Special Edition) 3 DAY SPECIAL PRICE
Warner Home Video Press Release
It’s taken more than half century but the wait is finally over. On November 11, Quo Vadis, one of the most lavish and spectacular films ever to be released, joins the impressive roster of Warner Home Video’s Two-Disc Special Editions DVDs. This panoramic spectacle -- an historic biblical epic with literally a cast of tens of thousands and filmed in brilliant Technicolor – has been the beneficiary of a meticulous photochemical restoration especially for its premiere DVD issue. This new release also restores -- and marks the video debut of -- composer Miklos Rozsa’s magnificent overture as originally presented during the film’s premiere roadshow theatrical engagements.
Nobody had ever made a movie quite like Quo Vadis prior to its release in 1951, five to ten years before other classic biblical spectaculars like Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments. The film was more than a decade in the making and was the most expensive movie made at the time of its release.
Directed by Mervyn LeRoy and based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Henry Siekiewicz, Quo Vadis was filmed on location in Rome and starred Robert Taylor, Deborah Kerr, Leo Genn and Peter Ustinov, who was nominated for an Oscar for his definitive performance as the Roman Emperor, Nero. Elizabeth Taylor, originally cast in a larger role but then replaced, made an uncredited cameo appearance as a slave, as did the relatively unknown Sophia Loren, who was appearing in her first American film. and won a Golden Globe
Warner Home Video’s much anticipated release of Quo Vadis Two Disc Special Edition boasts not just a stunning restoration of the film, but also includes brand new special features, such as a documentary tracing the roots of the film from its start as a bestseller, and a commentary by filmmaker/writer F.X. Feeney on the details of the lavish and complicated production. Quo Vadis Two Disc Special Edition will be available for $20.97 SRP, with a Blu-ray Hi-Def version to follow just in time for Easter 2009.

KINO: The Man on the Eiffel Tower in September
**Kino** has announced a September 16th release date for The Man on the Eiffel Tower (1949). With several PD prints in circulation, the UCLA Film & Television Archive has restored this version from two nitrate projection prints -- the only 35mm color copies known to survive. The single disc DVD will retail for $24.95, but can be purchased here at Classicflix.com for only $17.99. No details on Bonus Features yet. Based on a novel by acclaimed writer Georges Simenon, The Man on the Eiffel Tower is a gleefully sinister romp through the City of Lights climaxing in a spectacular scene on the city s most famous landmark. The film follows Inspector Maigret (Charles Laughton) as he investigates a brutal killing that implicates a ne er-do-well playboy (Robert Hutton), a psychotic medical student (Franchot Tone), and a humble knife-sharpener (Burgess Meredith). Featuring a dark, droll script by journeyman screenwriter Harry Brown (A Place in the Sun), The Man on the Eiffel Tower is livened by cinematography by Stanley Cortez (Night of the Hunter) that captures late 40s Paris in the dark, moody palette of the Ansco Color process. The film was begun under the direction of producer Irving Allen. Laughton was so dissatisfied with Allen s work that three days into the shoot he threatened to quit unless Meredith (Rocky) be permitted to take control. Thus did the seasoned character actor land the most unexpected role of his career: director. NOTE: The Man on the Eiffel Tower was photographed on ANSCO Reversal film, an early single strip color process, and no original elements exist today. The film has been preserved from two nitrate projection prints, the only 35mm color copies known to survive. It's been restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive in collaboration with the Library of Congress. |

The crowning achievement of the German expressionist movement is F.W. Myrna's The Last Laugh. Emil Jennings stars in the bleak fable of an aging doorman whose happiness crumbles when he is relieved of the duties and uniform which had for years been the foundation of his happiness and pride. Through Jennings's colossal performance, The Last Laugh becomes more than the plight of a single doorman, but a mournful dramatization of the frustration and anguish of the universal working class. Restored in 2003 by Lucian Berretta and the Friedrich Wilhelm Myrna Sifting, this Kino edition is the definitive version of a silent masterwork, presented with unprecedented clarity and a new orchestral recording of the original 1924 score. Photographed by Karl Freund (Cinematographer of Tod Browning s 1931 Dracula). This two-DVD edition features both THE RESTORED GERMAN VERSION and THE UNRESTORED EXPORT EDITION BONUS FEATURES:

Affair in Trinidad & The Garment Jungle in September
Affair in Trinidad (1952)
A murder investigation sparks a passionate affair between a dancer and her new found love. Affair in Trinidad reunites the screen-scorching team of Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford in this romantic spy drama of international intrigue and sizzling sensuality. Hayworth stars as Chris Emery, a sexy, hip-grinding dancer who works in a Trinidad dive owned by her husband. When he's murdered by an international spy (Alexander Scourny), Chris' life is turned upside down, especially when the police draw her into the investigation. When Glenn Ford, who plays her brother-in-law Steve, arrives in town the two are drawn deeper into the mystery and ultimately, into each other's arms. Fans of Rita Hayworth's dancing will find Affair in Trinidad a dream come true. Her very first scene includes a wild, uninhibited tropical dance to calypso music. Later in the picture, at a fashionable party, Rita suddenly steams things up with a sultry, sophisticated dance which devotees of hot rhythm will devour. The scenes between Ford and Hayworth are magical. The promise provided by the original movie poster, " She's back! With that man from Gilda!," proved to be all the original film audiences needed to make Affair in Trinidad a hit that even out-grossed Gilda at the box office by a million dollars.
Starring: Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford
