Criterion has announced 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman for release on DVD and Blu-Ray this September 24th.
The sets are listed as four and five discs respectively, and will have numerous bonus features as well as a booklet. Details below.
In the late 1940s, the incandescent Hollywood star Ingrid Bergman found herself so moved by the revolutionary neorealist films of Roberto Rossellini that she sent the director a letter, introducing herself and offering her talents.
The resulting collaboration produced a series of films that are works of both sociopolitical concern and metaphysical melodrama, each starring Bergman as a woman experiencing physical dislocation and psychic torment in postwar Italy. It also famously led to a scandalous affair and eventual marriage between filmmaker and star, and the focus on their personal lives in the press unfortunately overshadowed the extraordinary films they made together.
Stromboli, Europe ’51, and Journey to Italy are intensely personal portraits that reveal the director at his most emotional and the glamorous actor at her most anguished, and that capture them and the world around them in transition.
Stromboli (1950, 106 min.)
The first collaboration between Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman is a devastating portrait of a woman’s existential crisis, set against the beautiful and forbidding backdrop of a volcanic island. After World War II, a Lithuanian refugee (Bergman) marries a simple Italian fisherman (Mario Vitale) she meets in a prisoner of war camp and accompanies him back to his isolated village on an island off the coast of Sicily.
Cut off from the world, she finds herself crumbling emotionally, but she is destined for a dramatic epiphany. Balancing the director’s trademark neorealism (exemplified here in a remarkable depiction of the fishermen’s lives and work) with deeply felt melodrama, Stromboli is a revelation.

Ingrid Bergman plays a wealthy, self-absorbed socialite in Rome racked by guilt over the shocking death of her young son. As a way of dealing with her grief and finding meaning in her life, she decides to devote her time and money to the city’s poor and sick. Her newfound, single-minded activism leads to conflicts with her husband and questions about her sanity.
The intense, often unfairly overlooked Europe ’51 was, according to Rossellini, a retelling of his own The Flowers of St. Francis from a female perspective. This unabashedly political, but sensitively conducted investigation of modern sainthood was the director’s favorite of his films.

Among the most influential dramatic works of the postwar era, Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy charts the declining marriage of a couple (Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders) from England while on a trip in the countryside near Naples.
More than just an anatomy of a relationship, Rossellini’s masterpiece is a heartrending work of emotion and spirituality. Considered a predecessor to the existentialist films of Michelangelo Antonioni; hailed as a groundbreaking modernist work by the legendary film journal Cahiers du cinéma; and named by director Martin Scorsese as one of his favorite films, Journey to Italy is a breathtaking cinematic benchmark.

Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949) comes to DVD on March 12th.
Starring Victor Mature, Hedy Lamarr, George Sanders, Angela Lansbury and Henry Wilcoxon, this long-awaited Biblical epic has been restored from the original nitrate Technicolor negatives and will feature French and Spanish dubbing, as well as English, French and Spanish subtitles. No additional bonus features are expected.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Legendary director Cecil B. DeMille’s epic masterpiece Samson and Delilah makes its long-awaited DVD debut on March 12, 2013 from Paramount Home Media Distribution.
Starring Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr in the title roles, Samson and Delilah tells the story of the Bible’s fabled strongman and the woman who seduces and betrays him. The film brings to life Samson’s incredible feats, including his battle with a lion, his single-handed assault on a thousand Philistine soldiers, his struggle with a giant and finally the spectacular climax in which he pulls down the pagan temple. But it is Delilah’s quest for revenge and ability to bring down even the mighty Samson that drive this thrilling and powerful story. The lavish production earned five Academy Award® nominations and won for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. The film also stars venerable actors George Sanders, Angela Lansbury and Henry Wilcoxon.
Sometimes referred to as DeMille’s rehearsal for The Ten Commandments, Samson and Delilah was enormously popular around the world upon its release in 1949. Over 60 years later, the original film elements required significant work in order to return the film to the vibrant masterpiece that had so thrilled theater audiences. The original nitrate three-strip Technicolor negatives were scanned in 4K, and the three strip image was registered, cleaned and color corrected in 4K. In addition, DeMille’s original nitrate print was used in order to complete the original music overture and special effect work was done to clean up original optical images, a particularly tricky three-strip challenge. Finally, the original mono audio track was cleaned up and restored.
Interestingly, the restoration team noticed a shimmer effect in some of the scenes. Since they were simultaneously restoring Sunset Boulevard, they looked at production photos of Norma Desmond’s visit to the Samson and Delilah set and saw the enormously powerful lights that were required for the Technicolor production. This explained the shimmer effect, which was left intact. Arriving just in time for Easter, the Samson and Delilah DVD will be presented in full screen with English Mono Dolby Digital, French Mono Dolby Digital and Spanish Mono Dolby Digital, as well as English, French and Spanish subtitles.

WARNER ARCHIVE: George Sanders - Falcon Set, Death of a Scoundrel
George Sanders is the main Warner Archive attraction this week as The Falcon Mystery Movie Collection, Vol. 1 and Death of a Scoundrel (1956) have been posted over at WBShop.
The Falcon collection features the first seven features in the series with George Sanders in the title role for the first four films and his real-life brother Tom Conway taking over from there.
Death, a made-to-order role for Sanders, also stars Yvonne De Carlo, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Victor Jory, Nancy Gates, Coleen Gray and Tom Conway.

Death of a Scoundrel
"He was the most hated man on earth. But he could have been one of the great men in history. He was a genius." So begins the post-mortem recollections of the cast of characters that had the misfortune of crossing paths with Clementi Sabourin, a cad of such monumental proportions that only George Sanders could play him.
Clementi’s story plays out in a series of flashbacks, as his life story is relayed by those who knew him to the police, who are investigating his murder. Yvonne DeCarlo, Zsa Zsa Gabor (the ex-Mrs. Sanders), Nancy Gates and Coleen Gray play the eye-catching “Four beautiful reasons behind...the Death of a Scoundrel” promised by the film’s poster while Sanders’ sibling Tom Conway appears as Clementi’s brother.
Contributions from the equally celebrated James Wong Howe (cinematographer) and Max Steiner (composer) add luster to the film’s pulp noir pursuit of the truth of a great man, greatly dedicated to only himself.
